Martial Arts Programs for Kids & Adults that Build Confidence, Integrity, Discipline, and Self-Control

FAQS

Starting your journey as a Wing Chun student is exciting, but it can also be a little daunting. Below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that may help. We also encourage you to talk to your instructors, fellow students and parents. Open and active communication creates a stable, supportive learning environment.
Kung Fu Southside schedules and organises more than 20 classes a week to accommodate people of all age groups and sizes. Click here to view our complete timetable.

We encourage children as little as four years old to start learning Wing Chun to learn self-defence and become fitter. Our Kids’ Kung Fu classes are divided into three main categories based on age groups. Learn more about this here.

4-5 year olds can join the Grasshoppers classes
6-7 year olds can join the Little Dragons classes
8-14 year olds can join the Tiger classes

There are 15 students in Little Dragons classes and 20 students in kids and adult classes.
There is one Lead Instructor and at least one Assistant Instructor in every class.
As a traditional Southern Chinese style art form, we try to keep to these customs and traditions as much as possible. Therefore, we do not tip test but incentivise and measure growth in terms of hours taking part in training and skill levels gained.
10 Levels to Instructor Grade 5 Master Levels
Level one to Instructor grade will take 3 to 5 years depending on time and skill-set, but this is a journey, not a race. We encourage, help, and do all we can to help you achieve your goals.
Yes, this is likely. Your body is communicating to you that it needs exercise and conditioning. Body strength and toning are lost through inactivity. Similarly, exercise strengthens and tones your muscles.
Don’t skip class! Get the blood circulating in your muscles with simple stretching and light Wing Chun conditioning. As your muscles become stronger, they will adapt to strenuous activity.
Eat ‘living waters and live foods’. This includes foods that are high in water content such as fruit and vegetables. These are easily digestible and quickly absorbed by the body which saves energy for training and converts quickly to usable energy. The water content helps with hydration before and after training.
Yes, very likely. Proper nutrition and exercise will reduce body fat and tone your muscles. If weight loss isn’t your goal, speak to us about tailoring a diet and exercise program to bulk up rather than slim down.
Yes, Kung Fu Southside’s Wing Chun private lessons are very popular. You can work one-on-one with a private instructor to hone a difficult skill, achieve a specific goal or just catch up on a class.
Yes, of course. Our social events are never compulsory, but always fun. From dress-up days to open nights, we’re always happy to see you. Check our Blog for the latest social happenings at Kung Fu Southside.
Just wear something comfortable, you’ll get the uniform included in your trial on the first day.
Yesterday! but we both know that’s not possible, so I recommend booking your trial today by clicking the register now button and we’ll be ready for you when you work out the days that best fit your schedule.
You can but we hope you won’t, there is no lock in contracts and you can restart with us anytime.
Unfortunately, the trial fee is not refundable
You certainly can and if you want to do more classes than you are now it’s easy to upgrade your membership plan.
Yes you may. Any classes that are missed can be added the next week no problem.
No. If we were to stop payments over Christmas, we would have to add an extra admin fee to do this and it would defeat the purpose of pausing the payments and then reactivating them. Instead, we provide you with a reduced weekly fee to compensate for these payments. Your fee is simply broken over a 52 week period.
We close for public holidays as we want you to spend as much time with your family as you can. If there is a public holiday on the day you normally have a lesson, you can come to another scheduled lesson that’s appropriate for you. We simply ask that you do any catch up lessons within a month of the missed lesson.

My son started at Kung fu southside a month ago and already I have noticed a major change in his behaviour, he was bullied at school, so I decided to sign him into Kung fu south side and I’m glad I did. In short time he has gotten back his confidence and mental stability. He is more concentrated on his studies and has more discipline at home and school...read more

My youngest son James has just completed the 2 week trial and love's doing it. We have found that it has calmed him down. Thank you Kung Fu Southside.

I was really impressed with Kung Fu Southside. There was no hesitation to bring my son along and when we arrived Sifu Dave was lovely, as was Karmony. I am really excited to continue practising WingChun here!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Kung Fu Southside and Sifu Dave. I have no martial arts experience, so I was feeling nervous about attending their free women's self defense class—but Sifu Dave made me feel comfortable and paced the session really well for newbies. I highly recommend Kung Fu Southside!

I would just like to say thank you to Sifu Dave, for running a happy, relaxed atmosphere school, without compromising on teaching the skills. Having trained for many years in Taekwondo, I knew it would be a challenge changing to a different style, but Sifu and the rest of the class have made this transition a lot easier. I very much look forward to climbing the Wing Chun ladder...read more

4 of my kids learn Kung Fu at Southside and they are all loving it. The teachers are all great at keeping the kids engaged while teaching them some pretty impressive stuff, and they're always excited about their lessons. One of my kids is autistic and Sifu is fabulous at including him in the lessons and still having high expectations of all the students...read more

I have been taking my 6yr old grandson for lessons for about 3 months because I was concerned about his attitude towards others. Prior to that he was getting into fights at school and having detention most days. In the time he has been doing Kung Fu he hasn't had detention once, in fact he has been coming home with awards for good behaviour...read more
